But a bowl of oats is my friend and should be yours too. Here's the way I've been making it lately. It is just sweet enough (thanks to the banana) and packed with the best seasonal fruit.
No sugar added Cozy Fruit Oatmeal
makes one large serving
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup milk
1/2 very ripe banana, quartered lengthwise then sliced thinly into the bowl
Optional add ins- splash of vanilla, dash of cinnamon, or a grating of nutmeg
Combine the above ingredients in a deep bowl and microwave for about 3 minutes (depends on your microwave, just keep an eye on it the first time). You may want to put a plate under the bowl because it bubbles over sometimes. While that cooks, prepare the following...
1/2 - 1 whole peach, sliced and chopped into bite sized pieces
1 handful berries (I usually use a frozen mixed bag from Costco)
1 tablespoon chopped walnuts
Take oatmeal out of microwave and stir vigorously for a couple of seconds. The banana should be all melty and delicious in your oatmeal. Dump the fruit on top and stir in. Top with more milk or a drizzle of cream. I love soy milk on top of mine but keep in mind that some poor sugar cane was murdered and evaporated in the making of the soy milk.
Pears would be good also. Raisins and other dried fruit are always tasty. Bananas, apples, cinnamon, and peanut butter would be a winning combination. Or try a bit of cocoa powder with berries and some brown sugar.
